How usage studies are integrated in the design cycle

is illustrated using the example of a project with the university library of Hamburg.

One main focus was

• to investigate, what users do (1) when in need of assistance,
• to log and analyze video records (2), to extract revealing video sequences for the presentation (3),
• to plan (4,5) and implement(6,7), how users can be better supported in an interplay of online resources and personal assistance, and
• to optimize this through studies of real usage (8).
